Here is something of a random list (because they all had to be on Bandcamp) of albums by Canadian artists that I do or have enjoyed and/or felt are/were significant to me still now/at some point in my life, presented in chronological order (newest first) for no particular reason:

– Synchro Anarchy (Century Media)
My favourite of the Voivod releases after Piggy’s death, and while I can never decide if the proto-space-thrash of War & Pain or the angular-scifi-metal of Nothingface are my favourites, Synchro Anarchy is a nice amalgam of much of Voivod’s sound over the years.

Big Brave
– A Gaze Among Them (Southern Lord)
Big Brave’s albums often feel like continuations of each other (in a good way)… but I often find myself returning to this album, particularly the slow dirge gloom of the first track, Muted Shifting of Space.

Etaoin Shrdlu
– Mating Calls (Standard Form)
A short-lived(?) Toronto post-hardcore/math rock quartet, something of a supergroup featuring members from a number of different angular, math-y rock groups from Toronto and Ottawa from the late 90s/early 2000s.

Tim Hecker
– Harmony In Ultraviolet (Kranky)
Perhaps one of Hecker’s lesser known albums, but one of my favourites, with an appealing balance between noise and melody, structure and abstraction.
Prawdopodobnie jeden z mniej znanych albumów Heckera, ale i jeden z moich ulubionych, pociągająco zachowujący równowagę między hałasem i melodią, strukturą i abstrakcją.
Set Fire To Flames
– Sings Reign Rebuilder (Alien8 Recordings/Fat Cat Records)
Perhaps one of the lesser known Godspeed You Black Emperor side-projects, Set Fire To Flames are maybe a little more abstract and experimental — and occasionally krautrock-y — and less anthemic than GYBE, but equally emotional and introspective.’Love Song For 15 Ontario (w/ Singing Police Car)… is one of my favourite songs (and when I first moved to Montreal when I was 19, I also lived on Rue Ontario, although this song hadn’t been written yet).
Być może jeden z mniej znanych projektów pobocznych Godspeed You Black Emperor, Set Fire To Flames, jest nieco bardziej abstrakcyjny i eksperymentalny, czasami krautrockowy i mniej hymniczny niż GYBE, ale równie emocjonalny i introspektywny. Love Song For 15 Ontario (w/ Singing Police Car)… to jedna z moich ulubionych piosenek (a kiedy po raz pierwszy przeprowadziłem się do Montrealu w wieku 19 lat, również mieszkałem przy Rue Ontario, choć ta piosenka nie została jeszcze napisana).
Elevator
– August (Blue Fog)
Rick White’s post-Eric’s Trip project which was more about noise-psych-rock than the lo-fi grunge / folk of Eric’s Trip (who were on Sub Pop because, for a little while, Halifax, Nova Scotia was nicknamed “the Seattle of the North”… even though Eric’s Trip were originally from Moncton, New Brunswick).
Projekt Ricka White’a powstały po Eric’s Trip był bardziej noise-psych-rockowy niż lo-fi grunge / folkowy poprzednik (wydający w Sub Pop, ponieważ przez jakiś czas Halifax w Nowej Szkocji był nazywany „Seattle Północy”…, mimo że Eric’s Trip pochodzili z Moncton w Nowym Brunszwiku).
Rockets Red Glare
– self-titled (Blue Skies Turn Black)
Another short-lived Toronto post-hardcore/math rock group, making intricate, introspective rock music.

Picastro
– Red Your Blues (Pehr Records)
We have played with Toronto’s Picastro numerous times—even released a semi-collaborative split with them, Fool, Redeemer — but this debut album of theirs (with one of the members of afore-mentioned Rockets Red Glare) contains some of my favourite Picastro songs to this day, minimal / angular / melancholy slowcore…
Wielokrotnie graliśmy z Picastro z Toronto – nawet wydaliśmy z nimi semi-kolaboracyjny split Fool, Redeemer – ale ten ich debiutancki album (z jednym z członków wspomnianego wcześniej Rockets Red Glare) zawiera jedne z moich ulubionych utworów Picastro do dziś, minimal / angularny / melancholijny slowcore…

– There’s Always Someplace You’d Rather Be (Sonic Unyon)
Canada’s answer to My Bloody Valentine or Swervedriver…overdriven shoegaze from Hamilton, Ontario…the nearly 20 minute Puff, Analogue, Intelligent Jungle will always be a favourite of mine.

Skinny Puppy

Seminal industrial group from Vancouver…some of my favourite
Skinny Puppy tunes — Addiction, Testure, Nature’s Revenge — are not on this album, which was purportedly their farewell (until they re-united, that is), but this is one of their strongest, most consistent releases, I feel. And the last track, Download, is a wonderfully abstract industrial noise collage.

Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet
– Savvy Show Stoppers (Cargo Records)
Best known as the band who wrote and performed Having An Average Weekend, the theme song for the Kids In The Hall comedy show, this is their debut full-length, filled with twangy, angular, punky tunes… but they’re not a fuckin’ surf band.
Najbardziej znany jako zespół, który napisał i wykonał Having An Average Weekend, piosenkę przewodnią do komediowego show Kids In The Hall, jest to ich debiutancki album, wypełniony rozkręconymi, kanciastymi, punkowymi melodiami… ale nie grają pieprzonego surf rocka.
Daylgo Abortions
– Here Today, Guano Tomorrow (Fringe Product)
Over the top stupid punk/thrash metal with deliberately offensive lyrics and graphically gross cover art… but still some fun tunes… and essentially my introduction to the Canadian punk rock underground when I was sixteen. Best known (domestically, at least) as the first Canadian musical group to be charged with disseminating obscene material in the Supreme Court of Canada (though they won the case).
Ponadprzeciętnie głupi punk/thrash metal z celowo obraźliwymi tekstami i graficznie obrzydliwą okładką… jednak zawierający kilka fajnych melodii… i zasadniczo będący moim wprowadzeniem do kanadyjskiego punk rockowego podziemia, kiedy miałem szesnaście lat. Najbardziej znany (przynajmniej w kraju) jako pierwsza kanadyjska grupa muzyczna, która została oskarżona w Sądzie Najwyższym Kanady o rozpowszechnianie nieprzyzwoitych materiałów (choć wygrali sprawę).
Jane Siberry
– The Walking
Weird angular progressive pop with odd, warbling vocals — slightly marred by the 80s production sound, but is still today an interesting album that blurs the boundaries of pop music… Canada’s answer to Laurie Anderson…?
Dziwny, kanciasty progresywny pop z osobliwymi, świdrującymi wokalami – nieco zepsuty przez brzmienie produkcji z lat 80., ale do dziś interesujący album, który zaciera granice muzyki pop… Kanadyjska odpowiedź na Laurie Anderson…?
Shuffle Demons
– Streetniks
Best known (domestically, again) for their novelty, jazz/funk/rap hits like Spadina Bus (which bus no longers exist in Toronto—it’s been a streetcar for ages), Out of My House Roach, and their cover of the Hockey Night In Canada Theme — which some might dismiss as, well…silly—but these guys are great players.
Najbardziej znani (ponownie głównie w kraju) ze swoich nowatorskich, jazzowych/funkowych/rapowych hitów, takich jak Spadina Bus (który to autobus już nie istnieje w Toronto – od wieków jest tramwajem), Out of My House Roach i ich cover Hockey Night In Canada Theme – który niektórzy mogą odrzucić jako… głupi – ale ci faceci to świetni gracze.
Bruce Cockburn
– Sunwheel Dance
Introspective, acoustic folk coming out of Toronto’s Yorkville scene — Canada’s answer to the Haight-Ashbury scene (because Canada, with its cultural/identity inferiority complex, always needs an ‘answer to,’ as evidenced by my continued use of that phrase). Cockburn got more rock-oriented and had bigger hits in the 80s (though arguably it was The Barenaked Ladies covering one of his songs who had a bigger hit than Cockburn ever did), but this album with its simpler, fingerpicked guitar tunes was a favourite when I was growing up.
Introspektywny, akustyczny folk wywodzący się ze sceny Yorkville w Toronto – odpowiedź Kanady na scenę Haight-Ashbury (ponieważ Kanada, ze swoim kulturowym / tożsamościowym kompleksem niższości, zawsze potrzebuje „odpowiedzi”, o czym świadczy ciągłe używanie przeze mnie tego wyrażenia).
