FOQL – The Metamorphosis – theatre music

Anxious magazine FOQL – The Metamorphosis – theatre music

Original music from the theatre play “The Methamorphosis” composed by Justyna Banaszczyk aka FOQL

“Franz Kafka apparently had no ear for music – yet his texts give the impression of someone whose hearing was sensitive to the point of misophonia; who experienced the world in all its terrifying excess of noise and static of unclear origin. FOQL’s The Metamorphosis seems to have come straight from Kafka’s head: on the album, inhuman, industrial sounds meet with embarrassingly organic ones. ‘Ugly’ noise is transformed into beautiful harmonies, and the memories of ‘pretty’ melodies are ripped into shreds. This is how Justyna Banaszczyk translates her subject into the language of music, with added layers of ambiguity. Although the pieces were commissioned by Grzegorz Jaremko for the theatre production of Metamorphosis he directed, FOQL’s album is an autonomous, multi-layered work that testifies to her extremely personal, intelligent and moving reading of Kafka’s text.” (Anna R. Burzyńska – theatre critic)
